Switchcane, named after the small bamboo-like plant that grows wild throughout the 40-acre site on Paris Mountain, is a residence built of ‘commercial’ materials and offers restraint and security to the owners and their extensive art collection.
The residence, located in an open plateau on the side of the mountain, was designed to provide privacy. The owner desired exterior building materials to be non-traditional, large in scale, and low in maintenance.
The design was conceived as a series of blocks of space that enjoyed the contrasting orientations of distant mountain views (macrocosm) and the confined views into the secluded landscaped courtyard (microcosm). Custom colored black concrete masonry was developed specifically for this project and the design draws on the inherent elegance of this material with simple and creative detailing.
